Waka Ama Regionals @ Huntly Dec 3rd 2011

On Saturday the waka ama people had to wake up at 5.00am and get ready for the big day. We had to meet at school and left at 5.30am. It took 2 hours to get to Huntly, when we got there we got dressed into our number one uniforms and headed straight to get our lifejackets on and grab our paddles. We were in lane 4 and came second behind Ruamata. We got out and went for lunch. We had a 250 metre race and won that. We became the best team out of 30 Bay of Plenty and Waikato regional teams. We had the 500 metre race and won that too. We left after that and slept all the way back to Rotorua.

Waka Ama Regionals @ Huntly Dec 3rd 2011

On Saturday me and my mates went to Huntly to compete in the waka ama regional competition against heaps of other waka ama clubs in the Bay of Plenty and the Waikato regions. On our first race we lost by an inch against Ruamata. In the second race we went to the 250 metre line to start the race. We were off! Before I knew it we had won the race and the midget boys competition for the 250 and 500 metre races.

Waka Ama Regionals @ Huntly Dec 3rd 2011

On Saturday we had to wake up at 5.00am to go to Huntly for our waka ama regional competition. We hopped onto the bus and dressed into our sports uniforms. We got there and had to grab a lifejacket and a paddle and then head straight into our lane. We paddled over and waited until the green flag went up. I was shaking. We zoomed off quickly but Ruamata caught us fast and just beat us by a ant's toe nail to the line. We sat down and had a little snack because our next race was at 11.30am. It was time for us to race our second race; it was the 250 metre midgets final race. We were on; Boom the flag went down, we paddled as fast as we could. We won the midget championship for 250 metres. It was time for the 500 metre finalist championship. We went as fast as we could. I could feel butterflies in my stomach and tried really hard. We smashed them! Yay, now we are the Regional Waka Ama Champions for the Midget Boys.......woohoo! We got dressed, got on the bus and crashed out.

Waka Ama Regionals @ Huntly Dec 3rd 2011

On Saturday all the waka ama children had to come to the school at 5.00am to get on the bus at 5.30am, so we could get to Huntly by 8.00am for our first race. In the first race I had to watch because there was a steerer taking my place to keep our waka in the right lane. In my race, the finals for the 250 metre midget boys, we came first and in the 500 metre race we came first too. We are now the regional champions! Goooooo Sunset Primary School Midget Boys Waka Ama crew 2011!
